Hello Andy - welcome to CycleChat and good on you for wanting to get fit. Don't worry too much about aiming for any sort of level to start with - just get out and do whatever feels comfortable at the start and enjoy it. The fitness, strength, length of rides, etc. will all come up over time as your body gets used to cycling and you get comfortable on your bike/s.

Can we just clarify, when you say "I'm reading about this bike fit" - do you mean simply using a bike to get fitter, or do you mean getting yourself properly measured and "fitted" for the bike you have - such as saddle height / position, handlebar reach / angle, crank lengths, etc.?

Also, what type/model of bike are you starting out on?

Cheers,
Shaun

I'm getting a bike from a fellow member on here it's a team carbon 2010 I have a specialised rock hopper for my mud needs I'm going to be using it for riding to work on I must say I have never really known how to measure yourself for a bike so all info is greatly appreciated and helpful I need to be fitter and going to the gym is starting to bore me!

Sheldon brown has lots of tips on saddle height etc, as well as YouTube vids
That^

The single, most important thing about getting your bike setup to suit you is that you find it comfortable.
