Had a look at headset on the winter bike as it was getting a bit rough and it is goosed so I am going to have to replace it. I have a replacement heatset sitting doing nothing in my garage and thought I'll have a go replacing it myself. However the outer parts are fused into the frame top and bottom. Mentioned it to guy in LBS who said that I might be able to use cup removing tools which I don't have or failing that knock them out with a chisel. I am wondering if anyone here has tried this and has any tips?

Tap round evenly with a screwdriver and it should be easy.

Take it into the LBS they'll have the correct tool for the job, ( a sort of expandy grabby thing) don't start attacking it with chisel or a screwdriver for gawds sake!

Worked for me on many occassions. A method tried and trusted by cyclists since the dawn of time.

Maybe, but if your man is as ham fisted as me he'd likely end up with either a digit missing or a wrecked frame. I know my limitations.:biggrin:

If your head set has 'outer cups' then you can remove like he suggested... all depends upon how you'd like to preserve paint finishes etc... and have the tools... also depends upon what your bike is made of ? Steel/Carbon/Alloy ?

But a good LBS can do it...... no damage...........

It shouldn't be too difficult to make one of those remover tools, should it?
