hello everyone, i purchased a bianchi road bike from evans cycles in january and have a niggling problem with it,the first gear makes a clicking or rattling sound as if it is not engaging properly, the other gears seem to do it but nowhere near as bad as first,i intend to take the bike to evans to have a look at it (great service by the way) but before i do i was wondering if anyone can tell me what might be causing the problem..thanks dobber

Probably an "indexing" problem, due to cable stretch - a quarter turn or half turn anti-clockwise on the cable adjuster where it runs into the rear mech might well fix it.
It could be the limit screw, but on a new bike that's (I hope) unlikely to be wrong.

It's best if you understand what's going on.

Turn the bike up and watch how the chain rides on the sprocket - you will find that the jockey wheels are not perfectly in line with the sprocket so the chain is not riding correctly. Simply turning the adjuster one turn will move the jockey wheels more in line and cure the problem (although if you turn the wrong way then it will get worse so you just give it 2 turns the other way). It may need a bit more fine tuning but you get the general drift.

Incidentally most good shops offer a free after sales bike service to deal with things like this - I'd also check that the wheels are still true.
