Chance is you have gunged up or worn gear cabling, easy to check (release at mech and see how freely the inner can slosh around in the outer) and inexpensive to fix (if you diy, you can get inner or outer for a couple of £s).

Adjustment. Although there is a clear difference between high end and cheap kit, the quickness of a gear change is not that different. The quality is in the feel and weight of the kit and maybe a little durability.

Okay thanks but my bikes only like 8weeks old

In that case you should check cable tension adjustment, cables often need adjusting after a few weeks. If it is the rear I would suggest you shift it to one of the middle cogs and look from behind how close the top jockey wheel is directly vertically under the sprocket, chance is it is slightly out and you can twiddle the relevant adjuster (on mech or downtube) to make it perfectly vertical. For front mech see relevant section under Adjusting Indexing here.

Probably needs a good service. I really liked the claris shifters/gears on my tdf ......but when they started shifting late or whenever they felt like it, knew it was time for a tune up

You should get a free service from Halfords after 8 weeks if you got it from there? This is to correct initial cable stretch etc.

Take it back to halfords for its eight week check and ask them to show you how to adjust them with the cable adjusters its quite easy and does work I also ride a tdf not a bad steed for the money .
