Assuming that you bought it from a shop, the seller should be prepared to give it a free check-over for you. It's not unusual for some adjustment to be required on a new bike, just the new components settling in.

Or the chain and/or the sprockets are worn.

I hope not! Not after only 350 miles!!

I'd 2nd the advice about taking it in to the LBS you got it from - they should be happy to tweak the gear set up. Did you get a free first service offer from them? Because that's exactly the sort of adjustments they'd do on a 1st service.

Correct cable tension is essential for indexed gears to work properly.
The cable actuating your rear derailleur had stretched slightly. This is quite normal on a new bike and it has affected the gears.
To remedy this, you need to re-tension this cable - a very simple job. Simply wind the adjuster out slightly (anticlockwise) a quarter turn at a time, until the gears are running tickety-boo again. Do this while cycling, as the gears act a little differently in tension ie when you're pedalling.
There are two adjusters for the rear derailleur - one going into the rear derailleur and one within arm's reach when you're on the bike. Depending on what shifters/handlebar set up you have, these could be on the down tube or coming out of the rapid fire/twist grip.
Take the bike to the shop for its first service, as there will be other things which need tweaking.
Happy cycling!

Oh, BTW, That rear mech cable tension adjuster is the FIRST thing to seize on a bike.
Give it a tiny spray of releasing oil, and then a couple of days later, wind it out COUNTING AS YOU GO, smear some grease on the thread, and then wind it back in again.

What's the recommended mileage that a new bike should be taken back for this sort of adjustment/check? I've seen 6 weeks mentioned, but I guess it depends how many miles the bike has done in that sort of timeframe?

NOOO

Bikes can slip out of adjustment at any time and you really need to know how to sort it out by the roadside. It is a two minute job.
Your LBS while a great asset is not cycling next to you all the time so unless you know how to mend or adjust your bike you turn a simple problem into a ruined ride/day/holiday.
