Hi there

The gears on my Forme Longcliffe 3.0 road bike have started to slip.

By slip I mean when I am on the smallest of the 2 crank rings, labouring up a hill, the chain has the bleedin' annoying habit of slipping down the 10 speed cassette to a higher gear (smaller sprocket).....just as well I never stand up off the saddle!

Is anyone who is familiar with the Shimano Tiagra gears able to give me some advice on how best to adjust them?

many thanks in advance

Steve

Probably not an adjustment issue. More likely a worn out chain and cassette. How many miles have they done?

check your chain tension its possible lack of chain maintenance has worn both the chain and cassette down causing it to slip. The cable adjustment will only alter how to select a gear to be fair. I.e regardless of how much pressure you apply it would change gear as you mentioned. Have a look online to find out how to measure your chain slack and see if a link can be removed from the chain.

Chain slip is when the chain skips over the cassette usually due to excessive wear, unlikely with only 750 miles on the bike. Your OP suggests that when you apply heavy pressure it causes the bike to change gear at the rear. That being the case I would suspect the cable tension on the rear derailleur needs to be increased.

Agreed - check out Youtube for how to index a rear derailleur - there are some excellent videos showing how to get your gears working smoothly. (It may take 2 or 3 attempts to get it right.)
