I've been commuting for about a year now and as, at this point, I've come to realise that I'm hooked on cycling I figure it's time to put all the "saved" petrol money towards a new bike! Nothing wrong with the one I have (and I'll probably still use it for the winter, gritted road months) but it was a relatively cheap thing and I want something a bit more expensive.

I've not cycled for years though and am a bit out of touch technology wise. I'm considering a Specialized Sirrus Carbon Pro but notice it uses a lot of SRAM Apex kit. Is this any good? I know at this price level I could easily get Shimano 105 on an alloy frame? Is SRAM Apex as good as/worse than the 105 setup? Does the Carbon frame offset any drop in equipment quality, if indeed there is any?

Alternatively I'll gladly look at any other suggestions people may have. My only real "must" is flat bars for the visability they offer.
