Hello everyone.

I have an 18 gear road bike and cannot use the 17th and 18th gears properly. Everytime I go into these gears at the start of a run or up a hill, they click and continue to click. This happens when I start or after I have stopped for traffic lights, traffic, etc and also when I go uphill.

When I have got a bit of speed up using the 16th gear I can then go into 17 and 18 fine as long as I don't stop or go uphill. It is only when I apply pressure to 17 and 18 do the gears start to click.

Any ideas as to the reason(s) why and any possible resolutions?

Kind regards,

Goonerchamp.

Hi
Could be the cable has stretched -- what shifters are you using ? I'd advise you to get the bike on a stand and re-adjust the rear mech settings, going through all the gears as a starter.

Hi,

It may be just a simple adjustment of the cable going into the rear mech. You turn the adjuster left/right as required to realign the chain.

I can't explain it very well, but was shown how to do it at a bike workshop demo for 'newbies'. You should find some tutorials on You Tube as well.

It could also be that the inward 'stop' is not correctly adjusted. This is the little screw marked L at the rear of the derrailleur, next to the one marked H. Try turning it a half turn - it can easily be put back if that is not the problem.
