I am sure this has been covered before but here we go again:
How easy is it to adjust the gears as mine slip cogs sometimes which can be very irritating, especially when going uphill.
Is the answer to take the bike to the local bike shop in the hope that it will be fine tuned to my satisfaction?
I have taken my MTB to the shop for the same reason and it is better than it was before but still not 100%.
My racer derailled twice because the chain went over too far and sometimes misses a gear.

Agree with the other posters, Once you get your high/low stops sorted then it should just be a case of a bit of fettling to get the tension correct on your barrel adjuster. I found this you tube video useful for the high/low stops:

Absolutely

IME the tension seems to be everything for good gear change. What I do when adjusting everything fails, I then look at replacing the gear cable and the cable outers, especially the bit on the back that loops to the derrailieur.
