So I got a new wheel from Evans Cycles which they put my old cogs on and am now having real problems with the fourth gear slipping when shifting to it both up and down as well as all the gears shifting down from fifth to first. Bizarrely going up (aside from fourth) is fine and fifth to eighth are fine either way.

Any ideas? Or do I need to loosen the indexing completely then slowly tighten - which is a right pain when you don't have either a stand or a tree with decent branches to hang bungies off.

That sounds odd, not sure what wheels you have, have they either not replaced a spacer, or put a spacer on thats not needed. That's my best guess.

Irrelevant really as the indexing is the same just the position of the cassette is a little different, so if the RD is correctly adjusted it won't make any difference, providing the cassette isn't lose this could effect the shifting.
@Simontm when you say slipping is it slipping whilst on the actual cog or when you shift to it only, if its a problem shifting to the cog more usually up to it, i.e. from 3 to 4 rather than 5 to 4, its likely to be a cable issue (dirt, if cables are exposed), if it only slips whilst on the cog its likely to be chain/cassette wear, this is where I would expect mine to wear quickest as I ride more on the 38x17-16 combo than most other gears or gears 5 and 6 in my case.

Hi Nigel
The main issue is the shift down, 5-4, 4-3 etc. But it's across the four cogs. It's just odd and I can't work out the issue, as going up is fine (apart from 4). Also, the bike's only 3 month's old - surely it would have more time then this?

Age hasn't really a great deal to do with it, I installed new shifters in July and have done 1,600 miles, and needed to work on my rear brake cable this weekend.
Cable stretch, new bike cables are likely to have stretched a little, you haven't said what kit it is, but now matter this is pretty general, some where on the gear cable line there will be a cable adjust, this is likely to need just tightening slight usually anti-clockwise just enough to take up the excess cable it will only likely need a little, if its a shifting issue, again make sure the cables are clean and the outers as these really do lead to most shifting issues, its very rare for it to be the mech or gears after such a short time, but the weather hasn't bee very good this year and wet weather throws up some s***, also where the cables go under the BB.

Cheer Nigel.
It's an 8-gear, with a Shimano Acera derailleur, and a Sun Race 11-32T cassette.

On previous bikes, I've loosened the adjuster then re-tightened. That work? Or, since I am at work, just tightening the adjuster?

Just tightening it should do it, if thats what it is, I can't be 100%, I would still be tempted to clean the cables when you get chance, I usually change them at least once a year, so its not really much of an issue, but its where I look first for shifting problems.

A quick update - after a bit of quick tightening, the gears are moving more smoothly and I have fourth back.

However, it appears that I have lost first. As in the chain will not go onto it. Somehow the limiter as tightened/altered so that the second cog is the stopping point  So that's something to sort out if I get home before dark tonight.

Still, I hardly ever used first and it's doing my cadence a power of good
