Gear slip

Evening all. My specialized Rockhopper has just developed an irritating gear change issue

Basically, whatever cog I'm in on the front triple, whenever I try to engage the largest rear cog, it simply won't settle in and jumps about. On the rare occasion it does settle in, when I change up, it actually jumps to the third biggest cog, so missing out the second biggest one. Every other gear combination works like a dream and the bike is a joy to ride.

Simple adjustment or do I need to get it to a bike shop? It had a thorough service about a year ago and had the rear wheel bearings changed last month

Thanks all.

Mike.

Sounds like a simple adjustment of the cable as it's gone a bit slack. Turn the barrel adjuster (Where the cable enters the rear mech) anti clockwise a quarter turn at a time and see if it improves.

Is there any chance you have layed the bike on it's side, knocked the rear mech slightly, had someone take it off and refit it? What I am getting at is that is the symptons of an out of aligned rear hanger. Which when playing with gears should be the first thing to check.

I put the wheel in to a bike shop for a service where he cleaned, tightened and lubricated everything as well as replacing the bearings. He never had the whole bike though. I guess the gear hanger alignment is also a DIY fix?

Not really, unless you have the correct tool.

How many miles on this chain and cassette?

Likely causes

rear mech needs adjusting. (cable tension adjuster)
New chain and cassette needed due to chain stretch.

Less likely

Mech is damaged or twisted

Everything was replaced including the chain about a year ago. I am very roughly guessing I have done 1200 miles since then. That is a very rough guess though as I also ride a Defy 1 so I am not sure what the mileage split is between bikes.

I'll visually inspect it tonight to look for misalignment. I'll give this cable tension adjustment a go too.

Thanks all

Mike
