gear shifting problem

Im having to double shift to get any gear, no matter how much i adjust the rear mech, i think the chain may have stretched, does anyone know how to check this, any help much appreciated

It is not the chain, but there are so many things that could be the cause of your problem that only someone with much, much more information can help. Lots of suggestions will flow your way soon, I have no doubt.

Do you have to "double shift" going up and down the gears or only up them? To avoid confusion, going up the gears means moving to a smaller sprocket on the rear wheel.

It happens both ways, once ive double shifted it will shift with one click, but wen i change direction it requires 2 if that makes sense

Not entirely sure that it makes sense to me but it seems as if the mechanism is dragging or being dragged.
Clean and lubricate pivot points on derailleur, clean and lubricate or replace cable.
Is the derailleur firmly bolted to the hanger?
If it is waggling around that won't help.
LBS should be able to put a chain checker on the chain for you but that information might not be relevant.
