Hi there,

the left gear shifter on my 2013 Specialized (new Sora) gets caught in the brake lever when it returns back to its original position - see photo.

I think the reason is because there is a bit of play in the shifter itself. Is there an easy fix for this?
Many thanks

Is there some slack in the brake cable?

Hi, no noticeable slack.

It's a bit difficult to describe but it seems that there's "play" in the gear shifter, so when it returns back to its original position it gets caught.

If it is not right then take it back to the shop you bought it. It should work perfectly if the bike is new.

the brake lever may not be returning to its resting position if the cable is too short - undo the brake cable and see if problem goes away, if it doesn't that would indicate some problem with the lever/shifter combo.

It's the gear lever that's not returning to the rest position after changing gears or after using the brakes? If the former, will it push back into position?

I just wonder if the gear lever is resting on the back of the brake lever. Instead of pushing the gear lever back in to position, does it spring back if you pull the gear lever backwards? IE is it catching on the back of the brake lever?

All, thanks for your help.

I ended up applying a little gentle pressure to the shifter which just moved it closer to the handlebars and it no longer catches.
The cable length was fine.
