Guys

I have a Cervelo S2 and looking at giving myself a more relaxed gear ratio for long hilly climbs,

I am currently running 11-28 cassette and a 52/36 chainset

I am understand that if I was to go to a 30 or 32 tooth cassette I would need a longer chain and larger rear derailleur so I am wondering is it possible to chain the chains and take links out the chain in order to provide me easier gears for climbing.

If this is correct what size would be good for trying?

I was thinking

50/34

Would that be a good climbing ratio with the 11-28 cassette

i switched from an 11-28 to a 12-32 and didn't need to extend the chain or fit a longer dérailleur. Just give it a try. It certainly made my climbs a lot more relaxed.

(edit) ..depending how long your current cassette has been on for, you might want to replace the chain anyway.

In my experience you could use a 30t cassette with your existing rear mech ( I presume it's a short cage) anymore and you would need a longer cage. You would probably get away with using the same length chain, maybe fit a slightly longer chain when it next needs replacing.

Thanks

So if i did both I would still need the larger derailleur and possible new cabling for the additional length, longer chain.

If it suits your level of fitness, then yes.

Might see if I can get a lend of a different ratio next club ride.

Is a bike speed relevant to the number of cogs you have in the cassette? i.e. if there are 11 you have an 11 speed bike?

Yeah I think that is what I am looking at doing after reading and watching videos on climbing

Just not sure if the items I have found are compatible with my bike so waiting for a email back

Going to get these and get my LBS to fit with new chain and cabling.

Will this be ok?
