Hi, what order do shimano gears come in, in relation to getting better levels......acera, altus alvio deore....LX and so on. Where does SRAM come into all this? Basically I'm looking to get a bike with a higher level of gears. I currently have Alivio. Cheers

SRAM is a completely different manufacturer. I know with Shimano that the Tourney group is the lowest, but other than that - I can't help you.

To see a significant improvement you will need to make more changes than you may imagine.

If its an old bike of good pedigree but parts are worn out it maybe worth upgrading otherwise its never cost effective to upgrade to this extent.

Generally, the cost of upgrading is at least double the cost difference between models.

When the time comes to get a new bike, spend as much as you think you can afford, and a bit more, you will be happy you did.

I was not thinking of swopping parts, but just keeping an eye out for something with a better level of gears. Hence I'm hoping to find out the hierachy...a list would do!

My mistake.

Have a look at shimano and sram websites to understand the pecking order.

It is often the case that a brand will spec a couple of higher quality parts to catch the punters eye, such as a better than expected rear mech. This may entice a customer while ignoring the frame and wheels which is far more important.

The best way to learn, is to find a lbs that will spend time talking to you.
