Ok, so I replaced a cassette, cables and chain and got the bike in a stand to set the limit screws and cable tension. Not the first time I've done this but I'm certainly no expert (and YouTube has helped me along).

However, all is working week when bike in stand. Perfect shifting. No unwanted clicking or whirring as trying to shift gears. Happy man.

Then I get in the bike and take it for a spin, anticipating the joy of the perfect shifting I had just set up.

Nope. Instead, grinding, skipping, failure to shift on front deraillure. What a mess.

Anyone else find difference between set up in stand and when actually riding bike? Can't fathom this one...

Got that T shirt.
Check for things like cables trapped by the work stand clamp, mech getting knocked when you lifted it off the stand. More likely is the be cable bedding in ("stretching", although they don't stretch).

Thanks fellas. It does seem to be settling now so I guess that it probably is just the cables bedding in. I think that probably have an obsession about perfect indexing, like a lot of forum members I would imagine.

Thanks again for the helpful responses.

give the inner cables a good hard pull before a road test and readjust this settles the outer cables in the ferrules etc.
i am very lucky to have a good bike work stand but if you have a turbo trainer they can be even better as you can try out the bike before a road test.

Took me ages to get the set up right , trial, error, trial , error !
Got there in the end though ,
Got to build up one of the mountain bikes for my Son , so all the trial and errors worked out , should be sorted

Yes, I think that they're finally settling down now. I'm a musician and its a bit like when I change my classical guitar strings - takes a while for them to stretch and settle.

Thanks David and Ozboz, appreciate your input.
