Recently upgraded my bike to a second hand 2013 defy 1 (a cracking bike, I'm still like a kid on Boxing Day - albeit in my 60s !)

This seems such a simple question, so forgive my ignorance. When changing to a low gear (rear sprocket) by moving the lever all the way across, the chain will move at least 2 if not more cogs down. To achieve a 'one cog' drop, I need to move the lever only partially across.

This didn't happen on my older (and cheaper) bike. So is this something I can adjust, or is it typical with bikes such as the defy 1 ? No problems either way, but I'm wanting some assurance that what is happening is indeed 'normal'

Thanks in anticipation.

You can shift across multiple sprockets by sweeping the brake lever inwards, with Shimano levers. Having said that - one click should only shift one sprocket, but it is possible to push the lever a little further and get more than one click and shift more than one sprocket... could be ham-fisted operation or could be an issue, if you are hearing only one click and it's changing more than one gear...

It's by design that you change down 1 gear by pressing in partially and 2 gears when pressed all the way across. It's a feature of the Shimano 105 shifters on that model. I bought the 2014 model in August and its exactly the same.

As said above, this is normal. You can shift up to 3 rear cogs at once using the right lever, you'll soon feel where each "click" happens. Shifting just one cog needs just a twitch of the fingers
