hi all im new to this forum. i have a couple of problems im hoping someone can help me with i have a gt aggressor mountian bike and my front gears have an issue i can switch up and down between 2nd n 3rd but cannot get it to change down to first. when i click it into first the mechanism moves but the chain stays in second.

and its the same on the rear i put it into first its actually in second. ive tried cleaning and adjusting the cabling but still the same.

probably an easy fix for someone on here tho

Assuming that all the gears index correctly ?

The check your low stops as they might need adjustment , only a quarter turn out at a time !

If it's changing fine in all other gears, it's the Low stops. You need to allow the mech to 'slightly' overshift - i.e. just past the sweet spot on the top gear, BUT NOT TOO MUCH - otherwise it's shifting into the spokes = expensive.

Most gear changes go slightly past , then settle back on the rear.

Front - just let some more cage movement out from the low setting - check the cable allows this, as it's probably very tight and won't let the front mech drop down far enough. (use the barrel adjusters).

It could be something as simple as the FD not being able to travel it's full arc due to grit. Spray with lube and, with the FD in the small ring position, pull down on the cable as it passes along the down tube while rotating the cranks. Keep doing this until you are sure it's free.

I usally adjust the low stop on the front and the high stop on the rear with the cable clamp bolt loose to ensure the cable isn't preventing it setting on the stops
