I know that the immediate response to this will be take it back to the shop but I am just asking the question incase there is a simple thing I can do to fix it rather than take it back in which is a hassle.

I have just had a new chain and rear cassette fitted by my LBS as part of a mini service. I collected the bike in my car yesterday lunchtime (in my work clothes) so could not take it for a test ride. It is a 21 speed bike.

I rode to work this morning and found the bike will not go into the highest gear (excuse my ignorance in using the wrong terms here) in either the middle or highest gear on the front (2 or 3) it will not go into the highest gear at the back (7). I think this could be a simple adjustment of the limiter which I think I am ok doing.

However what I suspect is the bigger problem is it is not changing that well between the gears in the middle of the range (mostly 3 to 4 at the back). Sometimes it was not changing at all, sometimes changing fine and then sometimes slipping between the gears as I was cycling along not touching the gears. Is this symptomatic of something obvious that I can adjust or could it be a number of things?

I do not mind taking it back to the shop if needbe but if this is something I can adjust myself relatively easily I am happier doing that as to take it back to the shop means taking it along in the car which is a pain as well as meaning I do not have the bike for a couple of days.

You just need to play around with the limit screws, and the cable tension.

I'd take it back though, its pretty appaling that they would perform a 'service' and not address that. Either have them do it or get your money back!

Getting gears adjusted just right when they're wrong is a right pain. Take it back, bawl them out, and make sure they're running tickety boo when you go to collect.

Having said which, if you want to know what's involved, there are some good wee vids on bicycletutor.com
