Gear cables

Hi guys i have a Shimano Sora, 9-speed STI gear set and the cable that runs from my shifters to my derrailieurs is worn down quite alot and needs replaceing, Does anyone know if there is anything specific that you need or if you can simply buy any gear cables?

Any regular gear cable will do.

in theory there is.. but I doubt a cable which is x times more expensive will last x times as long...

You can also get standard cables and 'pre-streched' cables.

Normally when you fit a cable it will stretch ever so slightly with wearing in, and then will need some slight readjustment of the gearing to compensate. Pre-stretched cables supposedly do away with this need for later readjustment.

However, I've had no real big experience of using both types so I'm not sure how the sales patter matches reality.

IME, pre-stretched cables do stretch with use. Whether or not they stretch less than non-pre-stretched cables, I couldn't tell you.

Is this the month-old set-up you mention in your other post? Why is it worn so badly in a month?
