My front mech gear cable keeps losing tension due to vibration. The gear cable tension adjuster on the handlbar slowly turns back after a while. Its a shimano sora brifter but I cannot find a way to lock out the adjuster to prevent it from turning on its own. Any ideas?
Go to a DIY store and buy a small bottle of anti-shake compound for nuts and bolts. This is a soft grade of superglue, which will stiffen up and prevent the barrel from turning.
It's God's way of punishing you for using the term "brifter". But as mentioned up thread, gaffa tape, or better still, insulating tape, should do the job. (Shouldn't there be a spring in the adjuster to prevent this? )
I have (had) the same problem on a Tiagra shifter. It worked loose every 20 miles or so. I screwed it right in and then fitted a Shimano in-line adjuster when I changed the cables. Sorted.
I think that as Tim Hall mentioned, there is normally a detented position mechanism that uses a spring to engage dogs/indents between the fixed and rotating parts of the adjuster.
It's not clear if this is a Shimano shifter with it's own Shimano adjuster, or if some aftermarket bits have been cobbled onto the shifter. Perhaps some part of the adjuster mechanism was left out when adapting it to this shifter?
Is this adjuster simply spliced between lengths of the cable housing? There are many different types like this and as Slioch mentioned it might be best to just replace it.
A picture of what's on there is much needed I think.
