Hi, I'm putting my new bike together and seem to be getting stuck at some basic bits...what I thought would be more difficult turned out to be easy etc. Mostly this is lack of knowledge of components do what.

So bit i could do with some advice on...cable guide on the bottom bracket shell. On previous bikes this has always just been a plastic guide. Cliiped or bolted in in some way. On this new (Jackson) frame, the guides seem to be already there i.e. there are eyes on the BB shell. It seems to me that if I use these, the cable will rub against the shell, at least for the front deraileur, which is surely not a good thing.

A standard (one that came with the gears) plastic cable guide wont fit. Is there some other thing I can use / do.

Just run it through the built-in guides, that's the way it's designed.

blimey that was quick!
So you think its fine...just seems wrong. wont the cable take the paint off?

I'd love to post pictures but I don't have a digital camera. all my money seems to go on other bits and pieces. sorry.

You've got the Cinelli cast bottom bracket shell? Two holes under the frame, plus a little groove for the front mech cable?

It will eventually take a bit of paint off, but the shell is designed that way. Just keep an eye on it, clean regularly and spray with a bit of oil to ward off any corrosion.

don't thinks so. there are thre holes. one for front and then two for rear. no 'groove' which I would have thought would be there.
I'm thinking that you are probably right though, it must be designed that way. I'll just fit and keep and eye on it. Maybe fit a bit of plastic under it or something, see if that does anything. thanks for quick response.

Find a small length of the plastic inner tube used inside some gear cables or inside the noodles on V brakes. Thread the cable through this and position in in the guide. The tension in the cable will hold it in place and it has the advantage of protecting the BB shell and cutting down the friction also. It makes sense to fill the tube with grease before inserting cable.

Are the holes tapped?
Designed to take something like this?

I have the same problem on my Dolan cross frame, surely this can't be right, the cables are going to rub and eventually wear into the frame itself?

Use about two inches of outer cable cut from an old cable as a guide at that point to protect the paint. The tension in the cable will prevent it from moving.
