I have one and think it’s a great training aid. I also use it to navigate unknown areas; I upload routes prior to my visit. Have a good read here, Motion Based.

I have one, but there are others on here who know more. Mr dodgy of this parish has a blog that has lots of garmin-related info. http://www.velorider.co.uk/

When buying, consider whether you want to get the maps on SD card or on DVD. This is a very complicated business, so read around.

Personal experience - great for training, good for navigation IF you're willing to get to know the Garmin MapSource route planner that you use to download routes to the 705. Mapsource has improved a lot over the past year - it used to be pretty much unusable, but its still very quirky compared to most other route planning software/web sites. For the navigation of preplanned routes to work properly, you really have to go through mapsource.

i've got a 605 and it's great. Invaluable for audaxes. Not perfect, it does spaz out/turn itself off occasionally but not too often, and it always picks up again - I certainly wouldn't be without it.

Ok, daft question time as I've been considering a 705 too.

if you buy the maps on DVD, how do you get them onto the device? Is it just a case of getting your own SD card and copying them over?

Specifically I'm talking the City Navigator maps here.

Cheers

usb...
you plug it in and the program on your pc detects your garmin, when you've drawn your route you click 'select maps around route', and it chooses the part of the map that you need, then when you click 'send to device' it sends the maps over.

Got mine via Cycle2Work and a nice guy at Halfords in Solihull and I love it.

Yes get the DVD not the SD card maps.

Great for training and navigation and if you're a numbers freak it's brilliant for number crunching and analysing your training rides to death.

Recommend getting the cadence sensor to complete the set-up.

Is it possible to send over the rntire map e.g. UK/IRL? Should I decide I wanted to go wandering about for a day or two and wanted to avoid running out of map

The mapping format is open source, and there are a few websites now that provide free maps, or the widgets to generate them from other public map data. Its worth getting the garmin maps for the UK though, but avoid the Topo maps - they're trying to be OS but fail, so stick to the road-based maps and save yourself some cash.
