I'm sending my Garmin 800 back on warranty because water got inside it (under the screen). I have been reading up, is it true they just send you a refurb back out? Is this really acceptable? My thought is that I have only used mine for a few months and it has only been charged around 10 times, I doubt a refurb would have as good battery life as mine. I'm a bit annoyed as it's such an expensive item and it's already broken.

If its only a few months old take it back to the shop you bought it from. They may refund or exchange for a new one.

Its probably in their T&C that they reserve the right to replace with an overhauled unit. You should reserve your right to ask for a refund, if they are willing to repair or replace it under warranty then they are accepting that their is a fault with the unit that you paid good money for!

Doubt I would get far with that.

The refurb units they send out are as good as new. I sent an Edge 500 to them that was 3 years old after the tabs broke off the back, I had dropped it, scratched it, the rubber usb cap was aging, the plastic was discolouring from lots of use etc, the one I received back would not be discernible from a brand new, box fresh unit.

Sending a refurb unit is IMO preferable as the turnaround time will be dramatically reduced. I received my replacement within 48 hours of them receiving the broken unit. I posted it one day, they received it the next, they sent me an email to say they had received it. Later that day I got an email re. dispatch of a replacement unit, less than 48 hours later, I had it in hand. So all in, <72 hours!

Got to be honest, the one thing Garmin do well is their after sales customer care for faulty or broken units.

I understand that if the unit you send in isn't in the best condition but mine is like new, in perfect condition (other than the fault) and I know the history off it (not very many charges, no drops).

I personally don't see the cause for concern. If you had not been reading around you would even notice the device returned was not your original device (unless you went checking serial numbers), it will be as good as new.

Also the battery life IME doesn't degrade to any perceptible degree with use. I use mine heavily and have not noticed any drop in performance with age.

They sent me an email early this morning saying they have my broken one, got another one a minuite ago saying they have dispatched my replacement. Nice quick turnaround.

On the downside they haven't answered my question on refurbished models being sent out. They do say up to 3 days for replies though.
