Garmin slow to pick up signal

Hi there,

I've got a Garmin 200. Have had no problems with it for the last 18 months then for the last 4 or 5 rides I've had to wait a good 5 to 10 minutes for it to pick up a satellite signal! It happens in all weathers - cloudy, sunny, raining etc. Anyone got any ideas or advice?

Thanks,

Russ

Do a master reset. Switch back on and put outside for 15 minutes so it can reconfigure the satellite reception.

That happens if you leave it a long time between rides or start up a long way from where you switched it off - the garmin remembers where the satellites were last time it looked and if it can't see them where it expects, it does a full scan of the sky - at least that is the non teccie way it was put to me

Basically yeah. A warranty replacement 1000 I got last week took forever to find sats the first time round, wouldn't (obviously) update device time of day and such

I have the same problem sometimes with my Garmin 200, I switch it on 5 to 10 mins before a ride then select "Ride" when i'm outside ready to go, works most times straight away like that but still not 100%

I use the 200 for commuting, the Touring for longer rides, and provided I wait until I'm outdoors before switching them on they both get a lock almost instantly.

Mine used to be likewise, but now it's slow most time.....Could be because i suspect it's almost full as i don't delete my rides, last time i deleted 20 or so rides it seemed to respond to the gps signal much faster, but whether that has anything to do with it i don't know?

Deleting the rides sounds like a plan. Think mine is pretty full as well!

I don't know the exact workings of your particular model, but in general the device will try to download the GPS almanac (a prediction where the satellites will be). Assuming you don't have space for this then I guess it would not be able to update, but I would also assume you cannot record a ride. In addition the almanac can get stale quickly plus it can take quite a while to calculate, so if you don't use your device very often or you use it for very short periods, then the almanac is likely to be out of date.

To be honest i didn't really read the instructions fully and just assumed it deleted the older rides automatically, it wasn't until i had that problem i actually read them, by which time it was full. I then noticed that you can't delete all rides, it has to be done one by one.

I am fairly sure if you connect the device to your pc, you can then delete all the files in the garmin\activities folder via the pc.
