Garmin Live track

Nob question alert:

Do you need to have the app running in the phone and connected to a data plan while riding (as well as have your garmin edge 800 on) to make this work?

Or can I leave the app and phone at home while riding with only the garmin edge?

Reason...data plan sucketh currently.

I have the Garmin 510. To live track I have to sync my Garmin to iPhone with the App running and then carry both devices.

I am sure the op is aware of this, but the question was specifically about needing a phone to use data allowance for live track on a Garmin, rather than them going out to buy a Garmin specifically to track.
