Garmin support finally got in touch two weeks later...their reply although well meaning and prbably technically correct dies nothing to make.me ever want to contactbthem again or buy another Garmin.
I bought the Garmin and it should work from the box without me needing a degree in bloody ticket science.
Garmin express just fails...
Now this is what...a new customer faces to get the dam thing working..

I am happy to help you with your problem. There are a couple of files that I will need you to send me in order for us to look into this matter further.
Can you provide me with the following information so that we can help you as best as possible:
Error message or problem you have received What you have tried so far myGarmin username Device Serial Number
Log files XP
Can you please do the following on your PC?
1. Please click the following link: http://download.garmin.com/omt/tools/GarminExpressLogCollector.exe 2. Click Run 3. Click Find Log Files 4. Please email the ExpressLogs file that is saved on your desktop.
I will also need the Garmindevice.XML file. To find this file please do the following:
1. Connect the unit to the computer 2. Open my computer 3. Open the Garmin Drive 4. Open Garmin Folder
Once I have these files I will report this issue for you and let our software team investigate this further.
As soon as we have found a resolution for you we will be in contact.

...thankfully due to the geniristy and kindness of a felloe cc'r I should have maps very soon....so I'm very grateful for that.....but Garmin, you need to get real and make.products customer friendly.
