If garmin asked me to do all that, I would put the thing back in the box and throw it in the bin. What a load of rubbish.
I'm not impressed with they're normal car sat navs, utter rubbish and it costs as much to buy new maps as it does to buy a new sat nav. Waste of money IMHO.

I've been using Garmin products for over 18 years + GPS handhelds, satnavs and fishfinders and I find their after sales service second to none, but I suppose it does help if one lives very close to them and see them face to face.

I have a Foreunner 10 that is simple as anything. Connect to charger/USB and go to website and click upload

However the 910XT, phew what a hassle. It used to use just the ANT Agent, now they also have Garmin Express. F*** knows what that does other than slow down or stop and attempt to get data off the device

I've owned a Garmin Zumo motorcycle unit for around 7 years now. It works in a car/motorhome too and comes with all the kit to do both. It's taken me all over Europe by motorhome and motorcycle and also on 2 trips to Morocco (with some free added mapping). It failed once, three months outside of warranty, and Garmin replaced it, without fuss, with a complete new one. I've had to contact their customer service on a number of occasions and, frankly, I've found them second to none. I think you've been unlucky.
This week I bought a bicycle unit which was ... without any hesitation ... a Garmin unit.
For what it's worth, I reckon mistakes will always happen. The mark of a good company is simply, how well they resolve it.
Oh, by the way, it does NOT necessarily cost as much to buy maps as a new unit. My Zumo has lifetime map updates which cost me about £100 some years ago. I think it's now included in the price of automotive units, but not sure.

Mine didn't come with lifetime maps I bought the unit 5 years ago. When I tried updating the maps, they wanted £60.00. Bugger that. I now have a tomtom with lifetime maps. Downloading maps is also easier. I much prefer the tom tom. And I have a traffic receiver, all free of charge. Its brilliant.

We're all entitled to our opinion, even me ... and you. But, just to be clear, I'll repeat this. Maps do NOT cost as much as a new unit. And you may not like them but, as millions will testify, they are patently NOT, "utter rubbish". The foregoing are facts, not simply opinions

Your absolutely right. We are both entitled to our oppinion. The oppinion I have voiced is my own based on my own experience. I have just been on to the garmin site and to buy lifetime europe maps will cost £75.00. I only paid £90.00 for the unit itself.

if you have had good experiences, then well done. My own personal experiences however were not good as those you have experienced.

If it's new then rather than go through the rigmarole of deal with the 'help desk'* I'd return it.

* As in so much of modern life, get rid of the difficult bit in the title then you don't have to do it. As in :-
The Democratic Republic...
The People's Republic...
Help Desk.

Like the above poster, if as you say, its supposed to work from the box, I'd send it back and tell them to make it work and when it does, then send it back to you. Having to do all that is not working straigt out of the box IMO.
