Hello All,

I recently used my GPS ( Garmin Etrex for get which one) to go to a mountain Bothie It was fine on the way but on the way out I had to keep manual moving the pointer so it was displayed in the centre of the screen ,I hadn't knowingly altered anything but had created the route out on my PC as a reverse of the route in ( using bikehike). Can anyone tell me what the feature would be called to make the pointer remain in the centre of the screen as I move ?

Thanks all

Which erex ? Does it look like this? Forget the colour, is it a similar shape layout?

If so, when you movethe joystick sideways in the map/navigation screen it puts the device into plotting mode. This enables you to plot a simple one leg route directly off the map by scrolling around and selecting the point by depressing the joystick.

It looks very similar to the navigation screen but it isn't, and the map won't move as you move whilst in this mode. It's very easy to knock the joystick and get this screen without realising. You can get back to the nav screen by simply pressing the 'back' button.

Thanks Ffoeg, that sounds very plausible as I was using a bungee cord to hold the GPS unit on top of my sleeping mat which was placed vertical one end on the front rack the other facing up in front of my bars giving me a great view of it but maybe lacking in sophistication some what ! The bungee cord was very near to the joy stick ! I did have another problem in that the route was upside down on the way back but I worked that one out to be the fact that I had the unit set up as North up rather than track up. Sorry I should have said which unit it is it is the Etrex Sumit HC which looks like this. Next question which is going to make me sound dim ( I am before you say it) Which is the back button ? I seem to be muddling though whilst using it along side an OS map at the moment , I've had it a while now but haven't used it greatly added to this problem is I moved house recently and have no idea where the box/instructions are.
Thanks again for all your help.

On the current etrexs the back button is the top right hand side one, so I'd suspect it to be the same on the older ones. I'm not exactly sure on that though as I've never used your particular model.

This should tide you over until you finished unpacking and find the instructions - http://support.garmin.com/support/manuals/manuals.htm?partNo=010-00633-00. Once you get the hang of it they are great wee things... especially with the proper bike mount
