How many times does this thing need updating? it's the second time I've plugged it in to charge and more updates, took six hours to update the first time I plugged it in, it's spending more time updating than it is on the bike!!

Mine's been the same. I think there's been a new map update every day this week taking it from version 2015.06 up to 2015.10 or something like that last night.

Mine updated to 2015.10 about a fortnight ago, which took about 90 mins. No updates for me since then.
