Garmin Edge 810

I have just ordered a Garmin Edge 810 and was wondering who had one and what do they think of it? Also, I am slightly worried about the map side of it... Do I have to buy maps or are there ones for the UK available? I won't be using it abroad as far as I know (wishful thinking there!!) At the moment I use a Garmin forerunner 410 (from my running days but find it hard to follow routes with just an arrow) so I already have Garmin connect and I am thoroughly informed on how to use that site..... Any advice ect will be gladly received!

I think I might have looked into the maps bit a little more before parting with my hard earned money?
Try 'open cycle network'. You may have to Google it to get the exact name but I'll probably look it up and post it. Anyway, whatever the exact name, I use it on my 'Satmap' and, as the name suggests, it's published with cyclists in mind and its free!!!!

Although, to be honest, I don't know if it's compatible with Garmin, but if it's free then no hard done.

Don't worry about buying maps, just use OSM maps, I have Garmin city navigator ones, but prefer OSM as Garmin ones do not get updated less you pay and get locked to a single device so you can end up paying twice if you get them on an SD card and then buy another device, Example of OSM maps

http://talkytoaster.co.uk/maps/

There are other and more orientated OSM maps for cycling on paths or MTBing but the two links are best for road cycling

The other thing you want is Garmin Mapsource too (free), install the OSM maps into it and then it becomes a doddle to load the maps or parts of maps you want onto your device and also do your route planning in mapsource as well so that way the maps are compatible on both your route planner and device.

In the case of http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ you do not need Mapsource, though you have the option of installing that way. When the site's prepared your map file you get download links for a number of options:
  • "Installer for Garmin BaseCamp/MapSource (Windows).
  • Map for the Mac OS X version of Garmin BaseCamp.
  • Combined image for direct manual placement on the GPS device (gmapsupp.img)
A zip file just containing all the Garmin map tiles as selected on this website"
Option 3- the .img- just needs to be copied to a folder called Garmin on a Micro SD. Just did it the other day for my Edge 705.

Same here - I use openstreetmaps on my 810 - no problem with plotting routes on road or off road with it.

I also download routes from ridewithgps which work OK on the Garmin

I found free maps! Chuffed with that!! Went for a ride today, so far I am extremely impressed with my new toy! Love it!! So much data to take in!! Love data!!
