This is driving me nuts.
I have an Edge 705 and that works fine but for some reason I just can't get my 800 to give turn by turn navigation.
I've created a route using Bikeroutetoaster and downloaded it to my computer as a .GPX file.
I then connect the 800 and copy the file into the 'New Folder' on the Garmin.
When I start my ride, from the main screen, I select courses and select the course I just added.
I then press go and it calculates my ride.
Problem is although it draws my route on the map for me to follow (and beeps to warn me if I go off route) it doesn't give me turn guidance or the count down to the turn that it should.
I've enabled turn guidance (although I did this when I was on the route after it failed to tell me about the turn).
WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING WRONG?

Seems you have everything right, all i can suggest is to try another route with the directions enabled from the start of the ride. I got my 800 last week and notice there is an update avalable. If yours isnt on the 2.4 firmware then maybe an update will sort it.

Garmin Training Center (.tcx)
Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800 including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
GPX Track (.gpx)

Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrum trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 605 and 705, but will not have any custom cues. Edge 605/705 users follow these instructions.

GPX Route (.gpx)
Only the cuesheet entries, not the entire track. Useful for the Garmin Edge 205, 305 and Edge 500 for turn notifications (turn by turn directions)
This is driving me nuts.

Every time I make a route I store it on my computer and then just upload it to my Garmin for the ride.
I've been doing it for a couple of years and they're all saved as .GPX.
Are you saying they won't give turn by turn on a 800?

If you enabled turn guidance on the 800 once you'd started, it won't work; you need to stop, reset, then enable turn guidance. Annoyingly, the 800 seems to default courses to 'turn guidance off'. The other problem might be the file format. It should be .tcx as advised on the upload screen of BRT, and you can either send it directly to the device (BRT will put it into the new files folder), or save it as a file on your SD card or PC, as you know.
You can check if turn guidance is working, without having to do the actual ride. Load the course and click 'go'. On the map screen, press the instruction box at the top, it'll say something like 'SW on High St', which will bring up a list of each turn instruction for the route. Pressing on one of these will show the map page screen that will appear before the turn when doing the route.

All sorted. GPX files work fine (I know this because I've just done the same 4 mile course 4 times in my car!)

When I start my ride, from the main screen, I select courses and select the course I just added.
I then press go and it calculates my ride.

my mistake was between these 2 steps. Once you've selected the course you have to press the little spanner on the course page that you get and then select Turn Guidance ON (it defaults to OFF).
THEN (AND ONLY THEN) press GO.
If you review the course once you've pressed GO and change the setting to ON it's too late!

For an expensive bit of kit, it's not that user friendly!

Yes indeed, just as I posted yesterday. Deja Vu again.
