I'm doing a ride on Sunday and I really want to save the route.

Someone else who does not have a garmin knows the route in their head.

When I start the ride - I switch on the Garmin and then it says something like 'to save previous activity hold start to reset'...

Do I then press START and then cycle the route and then press STOP and it will have saved or should I do something else?

I so wish that there were proper manuals for these things!! I really don't get the full use out of mine!

If I understand it, in this scenario you are simply using the 800 to record the ride. If you turn the unit off it keeps the ride you are currently doing, when you turn the unit back on and press start it carries on recording where you left off. You could use this at a cafe or lunch stop to save the battery.
Pressing reset for a while will save the ride to memory. It normally counts down 4321 as it does this. Next time you press start it should start recording a new ride.

I avoid turning mine off mid ride, because I have found this stops the turn by turn navigation working and also I have forgotten to press start again ( there may be a bug that doesn't alert you ). So if I have a break I just keep it running.
Hope this helps.

Yes that sounds about right - I want to be able to follow the route again next week without my friends.

I'm hoping it saves and can become a route that I can do again and again and also pass on to others..

I won't switch it off mid route again. Thank you for that tip and for replying

Trickdem is correct - Point to note think of the garmin as a timer similar to a stop watch if you start a stop watch timer it keeps going until you press stop and if you press start again it carries on counting from where it stopped The stop watch timer will keep doing this until you press reset where it resets all the timings to 0. The Garmin works the same but it records much more information in the background but works on exactly the same principle as a stop watch so unless you tell it to start/stop/reset it will just keep on recording. In your case all you need to concern yourself with is the unit being reset prior to you starting your ride and then pressing start once you set off. Best then not to touch it at all until you have completed your ride. BTW there is an auto start/stop feature so if you stopped for a café break the timer stops but starts automatically once you set off again I do not think this is enabled by default where this helps is that your averages will not be affected and also you don't have to worry about restarting the timer again when you set off.

Ahh that is brilliant! I'm looking now to enable the auto start stop..

I will then get it back home, plug it into the pc and hopefully the route will be all mapped out and I can make it into a course!

Thank you both so much!

with you saying it says 'to save your previous activity hold start' it seems you have an 'unfinished' ride! to finish it, do as it says and hold lap/reset and it will count down from 4 to 1. this means the next ride will start from scratch.

for auto pause I believe its the following, switch garmin on, menu >settings(spanner icon) >bike settings>auto pause>touch that then select 'when stopped'

when you have done the ride, and stopped your garmin, hold lap/reset and again it will save the route. to save this as a route so you can ride it again touch menu > courses > create new course > this will bring up your history. touch the ride you want to create a route for (in your instance your sunday ride) touch the tick icon, now you can rename the route to whatever you like and touch the tick icon when happy, this will then save to your courses and enable you to ride it again.

hope that makes sense, if not I will try and explain it again!!!!

I'm new to it as well, steep learning curve! I practised by sitting in my lounge and starting a ride, then waving the 800 around for a few seconds to simulate a ride then messing about with the settings etc. doesn't sound very technical but picked a few things up! Saves losing actual ride data

I have the cadence magnet thing attached to my pedal crank (as advised by Garmin) using a cable tie!!

I have bought three magnets! They just keep coming loose.. How do I attach it better?
