Garmins for bikes and running don't really get cheap when new models come out, which is one of the reasons that folk will pay silly money for used Garmins.

I have a couple of Garmin devices (looking to sell 705) and I don't use the paid for maps. I use Open Street Map as I think they are just as good and if you find an error or a street doesn't exist you can update the map yourself and then in a few weeks it will make its way to your Garmin.

You may find that you can pick up a cheaper Edge 800 if you don't get one with the paid for maps and then use these maps. If you don't like them (you will) then buy them separately.

To download the maps go to :

So you could get an Edge 800 with Heart Rate & Cadence for £269.99 on Amazon if you used these free maps.
I've not checked how cheap you could get one else where.
You won't regret getting a Garmin they are truly great devices.

If I was you I wouldn't bother with navigation, just use openstreetmaps.

I missed that you also suggest Open Street Map. I think its great as people always moan about GPS maps not being up to date and with this you can "simply" update the maps yourself.
My brother and girlfriend both have the paid for maps and I honestly don't see the point.
Do you also use www.bikeroutetoaster.com to map your rides?

No but I don't "map" my rides. I do use Linux and various *BSD's though.

I am newish to my local area and the main reason i bought a Garmin was for the mapping which is why I love Open Street Map and Bike Route Toaster as they go together so well.
