Hi all
I have been looking for a good GPS and had pretty much decided on the Garmin 500 as this meet my requirements to upload .gpx files, integrate with Strava, and connect to Ant+ HRM and Cadence sensors in the future too

Then I read about Firmware 3.0 and the issues this introduces with routes >50 miles such as locking up and losing GPS position

It seems from what I have read that the main problems are for those with routes already saved in their Garmins, but if I buy a new one I won't have routes saved. So, I was wondering if I am likely to hit problems
One of the key things I'd like to do is plan a route of say 75-100 miles, upload it to he Garmin and then use the GPS for broad direction tips

Am I still likely to hit problems? Should I not upgrade firmware or plump or a different device altogether?

Hoping the great and the good on here can come to my rescue with some advice once again!

Cheers!

yup, there is a route problem which Garmin do know about and refuse to do anything about it or supply a firmware fix. I guess you have checked out the Garmin Forums about the problem, there are plenty of posts about it. It's not down to the 3.0 firmware either. All versions of the firmware suffer from the same problem

BUT... not all the 500 machines suffer the problem.
It seems to be luck of the draw. Some peoples work perfectly, some don't. (Mine doesn't :cursing:).
What you could do is break the route into smaller chunks of less then 40 miles each. A pain in the 'arris though.

To be honest if I was in your shoes wanting to use all it's features (cadence, hem etc) then I would look at another machine. Either the 800 or another make, Bryton etc.
