The 500 is the updated version of the 305.
Both have the capability for HRM & Cadence and GPX routes and courses.

However, there is a known flaw with the 500.
If you want to use the course feature ie follow a pre planned bread crumb trail. The 500 finds difficulty with courses over 40-50 miles and seizes up. (Check out the Garmin forums for more info)

If you want to save money then get the 305. If you don't want to use the course function but want all the rest of the bells and whistles and happy to pay. Then get the 500.

I love my 500, I love all the information it supplies. However as one who uses the course function a lot. That is what let's it down for me.

Thanks for that ianrauk...one feature i am looking for which i believe the 305 has is a virtual training partner, i want to see how well i do during or after the ride on a 25 mile course i have done before times etc, can it do that ?? Cheers:smile:

Yes it can do that, and more.
For training it's an awesome piece of kit.

Here is a link to the 500's manual. Will give you a better idea of it's features.
