Garmin edge 500 gps route upload problems.

Trying to load a route to my 500 without success. Copied and pasted the GPS files to new data on the edge. The unit doesn't find the new course.
Am I missing something obvious.

Have you created a .fit file and uploaded it into the course folder on the Garmin?

I use a few tools to do this as I prefer to use google maps to garmin connect/training centre.
1) draw up your route in google maps.
2) use a bookmark link found here to turn it into something the 500 understands. http://winthefight.org/cuegle/
3) copy the output text
4) open the following link http://winthefight.org/cuegle/garmin_load.html paste the text and upload to the Edge.

You don't need to do any of that. It really is simple as dragging a gpx or tcx file from your computer to the Garmin 500.

What I think you problem is, you are copying and pasting the file when you should be dragging and dropping.
Open 2 windows. 1: Where the gpx route is 2: the New file folder on the Garmin.
Then drag and drop the gpx or tcx file from 1 to 2.
That should do it.

I was always under the impression you needed to create it as a .fit file which I was never sure how to do. Thanks for that @ianrauk.

I assume it has to be loaded into the courses folder or the NewFiles folder?

No, it automatically converts to a fit file.
And has to be loaded into the NewFiles folder.

With the 800, I just create the ride in RideWithGPS and save the .tcx directly to the memory card (The folder Ian says, 'New Files') and it automatically converts.

Got out working now. Doesn't seem to like GPX files works fine with TCX ones. Thanks
