So I have been looking into a garmin. What I would like to ask is which ones are good and which are not? I would like to be able to follow maps and also receive data.

Is there any other cycle computers out there that also do this for lower price tags.

Any advice or experiences welcome.

Touring edge does the maps etc as long as you aren't fussed about hrm and cadence.

Otherwise look for a second hand 705 assuming you are on a budget. garmin are the best for mapping I think. What data do you want to receive?

To be fair I'm only after data such as speed, calories, distance, hight of climbs and time. Not to fussed about heart rate as I can access that from my phone if I really need it.

Would really like to be able to plan routes and follow them most of all and also download others routes.

Thank you for the quick reply and I will check out your suggestions today.

Those will do what you want. The cheaper ones have a breadcrumb trail you can plot and follow, but need those ones if you want proper mapping

Take any calories measurements on a garmin with a HUGE pinch of salt. 30-40'per mile is a decent rule of thumb, Garmins double that! Strava on your phone will give you the data you want

Check out DC Rainmakers Garmin review site.
(google is your friend)

He has in depth reviews of most Garmin GPS's and feedback from other users too.
A valuable resource to help you make up your mind as to what machine would suit.

Ideally I'm going to go to a cycle shop try a few out in store see what they offer but I will most definitely check out the review site before parting with the cash

If your on a tight budget consider one of the Garmin Dakota models they are a lot cheaper than the cycing specific ones but have the advantage of using AA batteries so if you're on a cycling tour and have no access to a charger you can replace the batteries. It'll record all the things you mention except maybe calories, but when you upload rides to strava it gives a calorie figure not sure how accurate that is though.

If the emphasis is on training, then a Garmin Edge, I use an 800, but it is hit and miss with all the Edge models as they all seem to have bugs of various sorts....if the empasis is on navigation, then a Dakota 20 which also has cadence, heart rate, elevation, speed and distance but no calories but its also a jack of all trades and can use if for cycling, walking, hang gliding etc, geocaching, driving, in fact, virtually anything.

Check out the Garmin forums to help decide amongst the Edge models.
