He wants a map for his garmin 810

Get the full official garmin ones? Work fine on my 800. The gadget itself however is another matter!

But need to explain what map is on there? Just base camp or whatever it's called?

I don't know how often they update - there aren't regular updates like for car tomtom, your house a newbuild? And also do you need your street as you presumably know where it is and the surrounding area?

You can buy the OS 1:50k maps but they are very expensive - it would have been better to buy your Garmin as a bundle with that as part of the package

Get open street maps off talky toaster..... Work well and plenty of detail.

I use the DC rainmaker links for this and the OSM maps. They are great, I have used them in the UK, Spain, France, Belgium, Holland and Ireland. Don't worry about coverage, they are very very good. They are also free!

The standard free Garmin maps on the unit are absolute garbage and totally unusable.

as others have said OSM works even on my 705. Though I wouldn't let it route me home if I was lost, certainly not on the settings I had it on, not tried it since I changed them.

+1 for Open Street Maps - work a treat around the country lanes of Devon! - and the DC Rainmaker site is great for step by step instructions on how to upload the maps. Also, good to check his reviews if you are thinking about upgrading your Garmin....

Good question - I use an iPad / bluetooth to transfer data from my Garmin to Garmin Connect, but use my laptop and cable to load routes onto the Garmin. Not sure if that's just habit or I read somewhere that it's not possible.... hopefully someone will have the answer......
