garmin 800 taking me back miles

Hi, I've got a garmin 800 and when I follow a route I've put into it it will normally follow it fine, but, if I go off course due to closed Road or whatever it will keep trying to take me back to the point I left the course! even if I'm turning back into the finish it will tell me to turn round! ! It also gets confused if I use the same bit of road on the outward and return leg. Please help as otherwise I love my garmin

Have you got "Recalculate" turned on in the "System, "Routing" menu, If so, change it to "OFF". Since the 800 came out it was always recomended to have it turned off, even by Garmin itself.

705 is much the same, though from what little experience I have, it tends to re-route to the end.
