If you want to use it primarily as a "sat nav", get an eTrex instead. If you want to use it as a device to aid your training, get it. I've not had any problems with mine in over a year. Get a GSC10 with it, partly for the cadence and also a bit of data accuracy since any GPS under tree cover will begin to lose the signal. The unit is very easy to use and the battery lasts a decent time - just about enough for a 10 hour ride. Adding HR and the GSC10 seems to reduce this a bit. The only downside is the mounting system which can break easily. This has been remedied for the new Edge 500, although that particular unit lacks mapping functionality if you intend for it to have a dual purpose.
I find the signal locks on within 30 seconds which isn't a problem whilst you shut the door and put your helmet on... far quicker than the FR310XT. The barometric altimeter function is useful but that takes a lot longer to equalise after the unit has been turned on.

Not to sure?
I was looking at getting one of these, but I wanted a pure GPS navigation unit, so I opted for a e-Trex HCX instead in the end. But unless you have the Mapsource software already then its gets a dear 'ole game.

Luckily I already had it installed on the laptop from another Garmin unit, so a quick phone call to Garmin and they added the software licence to include the HCX.

But after all that, I am still not happy with the e-Trex and the way that it navigates.

In hindsight I wished that I have looked in more detail at the SatMap 10 now, so maybe have a closer look at this before you commit.

I've been thinking about this, but i'm desperately going to hold out for a new model. It just seems a bit much cash for a 2 year old technology. Let me know how it goes though, would love to have my mind changed.

Off to HK tomorrow. Wonder how much they cost there

I am after sat nav for my mtb and the training side of things for my road riding
