Currently the Garmin 510 and 800 both with HRM and cadence monitors are on offer at approx £269 - which I can just about scrape together.

Which model would CycleChatters recommend?

if you want maps the 800, i believe the 510 has connectivity to smartphones etc but still uses the breadcrumb trail for ride mapping rather than proper maps.

If you want maps, 800, if you don't, 500 (not the 510, which only offers a new UI and some rather useless smartphone connectivity). IMO.

Its not unknown for me to go on a ride avoiding the rain, following the sun or just heading for where the scenery looks nice then to have the thought... "How do I get back to my car?"

As long as I mark the position before I set off I know I can always get back. Of course, you can do this with a smartphone but that usually relies on getting a signal which isn't always available in scenic areas.

So, that`ll be the 800 for my vote.

Another vote (from a 705 owner) for the 800. For the same price as a 510, I'd take the mapping every time, it's so useful. I've heard of more than a few issues with 510s and 810s from owners, including people I know, Garmin has an unfortunate knack of launching new devices without fixing bugs their predecessors had, plus a whole new set of problems. Sadly, the 510 & the 810 are no exception to that (and the 810 does not seem a big practical step up from the 800 either).

800, only used that model btw. The amount of data it throws back at you while riding them after you have downloaded is amazing!!!! You can really see your self improve and plan which parts of your training needs to be looked at.
