Dont have a 500 but you can with the 200, 305 and 800 so I doubt it'll be any different. With the 305 though, when you activate a course it pauses the timer untill you restart it (caught me out before ), it doesn't with the 200 or 800.
Yes, on my 200 which'll probably be the same as the 500 you just have to click courses, select your course, it'll go to the summary page showing you the distance etc. Click start (something like that). It'll then start the course. It will record the ride too, so you can upload it to strava or veloviewer etc. The button you usually use to change from average speed to elevation cal burn etc, will now scroll through the pages that show the navigation info and then onto the page you'd normally see on a ride - it'll still beep at ya though!
