lucky sod. I moved a couple of years back from a similar set up to 2 small sheds in the back garden where I have to carry bikes through the house....

well they're still up:biggrin: they seem pretty solid in themselves but you need to be sure you have decent fittings, they come with a two screws each. the wall they're on is concrete blocks, I used a No 8 masonry drill bit, standard brown rawl plugs and the screws provided. If I get any stability issues from the fittings then I'll upgrade to small expansion bolts.

I looked at a lot of solutions and preferred the idea of each fitting point, only taking one bike weight, rather than a multi bike rack. Also I can then choose my own spacing and heights. All the reviews I found on the Lifeline were positive and they do feel fairly sturdy. Only negative seems to be the plastic sleeving on the hook can come off. But I figured you can always glue on or replace with some surgical tubing.

I wouldn't want to swing on them but think they'll be fine for the bikes. The other option is you can add a support underneath, after you've hung the bike, to distribute the weight. Oh yeah, they were about £43-44 for the 5 of them.

Thanks, I think I'm going to order some. We have 8 bikes in the (admittedly big) garage and more coming, so it's getting a bit desperate now. We have a concrete panel wall, so I presume we'd be fine for the fixings too.

same here, still got 3 more bikes to hang, am going to buy another 4 of these to cover all needs. I can get 2 more on that wall, to the left, without interfering with the garage door. Those two will be lower for the younger MacB's bikes:biggrin: The other two will go on another wall for extra storage/options. I just couldn't bring myself to order 9, untested, in one hit.

Interesting, I'm looking at this stuff now to sort out my garage, I've 8 bikes to organize, 4 of them are the kids though so a) I don't think they can manage lifting them and ;) the height will change over time so need a floor solution for them.

Al, the weight/stress is taken by the rim I presume, not a spoke, due to the cantilever effect?

yep, a little care is needed when hanging them to make sure you get all rim on the hook and not the spoke/nipple. I hook the front wheel on, with hook in centre of rim between two spokes, then keep tension as allow bike to settle. The front wheel then rotates to settle rather than the rim sliding on the hook.

How about 4 hoists along the sides for the 4 adult bikes and you just stand the kids bikes underneath. That or get 8 hoists and fit extra long rope for the 4 for the kids bikes. Given the bike would be light and the pulley reduces the effort required this should be ok.

I've a similar arrangement in my workshop but used the plastic coated double 'hook-type' brackets from B&Q or Homebase, whereby the handlebars take the weight of the bikes. Very strong and neatly out of the way.

In spite of my earlier jealousy, in my old garage I had half a dozen 99p red hooks screwed into ceiling joists - worked perfectly.....
