It is considered an insult to show the soles of your feet or shoes in Arabic company. They are considered as unclean so regard it as a personal insult. In western company sitting with one leg crossed over the other is acceptable but not in arabic company. By throwing his shoe the person was expressing his anger and insulting the hat-stand of America. It is a pity that the ignoramus did not realise this instead he just laughed it off.
