I'm currently sat in a bus shelter outside Blair Drummond Safari Park. I lost the ability to change up onto the big front ring just as I turned and headed for home.

The heavens have just opened and I'm soaked through! Thank god for home made flapjacks and Haribo!
(And mobile internet!) Only 10 miles to go.... Oh the joys! :-(

If you are desperate to get into the large ring use can possibly utilize the water bottle cage nuts on the frame to hold the gear cable in place. Get chain onto top ring - manually tension cable and then use the nut to hold cable in place. Failing that use the middle ring.

Thanks, was able to limp home on the small ring (I only have 2 rings on the front). It put a wee dampener on what should have been a glorious ride, first time over 50 miles (53 in fact) which, considering how long I've been riding I'm quite pleased with. The rain just topped it off! lol

Glad you made it home. Sounds as though you need you front gear cable re-tensioned - Not a big job.
