I've had an issue with my bike feeling odd and slow and I think I've ruled out most things, eg, bottom bracket seems fine, rear wheel fine, no rubbing. I was wondering whether an out of true wheel can add extra resistance to your riding or over tight cones could add resistance to the wheel spinning?

It's driving me mad now and there's something causing a slowing feeling to the bike. It's not the 'engine' as I'm otherwise fit and well.

If it's rubbing on the brake pad then it would have a negative effect but I guess you would feel that.

Why don't you lift the front of the bike and spin the wheel? That should tell you if there is a problem.

Out of true wheel will generally only be a problem if it causes it to rub on the brakes or frame. Over tight cones will add friction and prevent the wheel turning.

Lift the wheel off the ground and give it a spin. Does it turn freely, or stop within a few seconds?

It turns freely, but not massively. Compared to the back wheel, the front stops rather quickly.

When I'm cycling it's like there's something dragging the bike, there's resistance coming from somewhere. I removed and re-greased the BB cartridge and checked for play, no issues. I've checked the rear wheel for rubbing on the frame (no brakes), all sorts. The only thing I'm left with is the front wheel, the brakes have a tendancy to rub, but I check before I set off on every ride.

I think it's slightly out of true and the cones are slightly too tight, but I'm no mech, so it's purely a guess.

Have you tried adjusting the pads slightly so they are not as close to the rim?

Yeah, there wide enough not to rub now even if the wheel if out of true, reduced my breaking a bit with pads traveling slightly further.

Is there anyone based in Greater Manchester that could meet me and have look who's clearly more mechanically adept?

Remove wheel and turn the axel with your fingers. Does it turn freely.

PS I still think it's in your head/legs. ^_^

I wish it was in my head/legs. It'd save me money. I'm really not enjoying cycling when there's something messing my ride up. Becomes a slog rather than enjoying it.

Are you riding uphill in the wind?

I feel the frustration though mate, just want to get on the bike and ride it.

I suppose you've checked tyre pressures are high enough? That could cause drag. So could worn bearings/hubs/freewheel?

I've checked the pressure. I do it before I leave the house usually.

When I get time I need to just see if the LBS lads can have a look for me.
