Stripped the front wheel on my ally Synapse disc road bike for the first time (bought new from Evans last September),
Cones were pitted and it had 10 ball bearings each side instead of usual 9.
cleaned regresaed and refitted with 9 new bearings per side and new cones all feels lovely .
The extra 2 balls are niggling me though, anyone throw some light on it.

Most have ten in front and 9 in the back. The back ones are larger.

The usual number is full up minus one.

I suspect the full up number on your hub is 10 which is OK but I think the bearings move around on the hub race a bit more freely with 9.

No, that's not a good way to look at it. Full-up depends on the radius at which the bearings lie. If you are packing the cup in grease, you can make the bearings lie in a small circle and then achieve full-up one bearing quicker than when it lies in it's designed radius. Obviously once the cone is inserted, the right radius is achieved but then the gap will be smaller than one bearing. Removing one is not a good idea, then the load is spread over 10% less bearings, which leads to cone failure.
