I am having problems shifting on my front rings:
1. I have pretty much lost the lowest/smallest ring. When I shift the shifter from 2 to 1 it makes a sound like it's trying to shift but never moves off the middle cog. To avoid any damage I am leaving it on 2 but I can no longer get up the hills.
2. Shifting from 2 to 3 is fine. But often going from 3 to 2 it seems to half move off the largest ring but never fully goes onto the middle ring. I have to shift up and down to get it to take.
3. I have noticed that if the front is in on the 2nd ring, when I get to 7 or 8 on the back, it sounds like it could be rubbing against something.
Is this just a case of that first service is long overdue? I will be taking my bike in for its first service next week hopefully - they and I have been busy this past week, but in the meantime is there anything I can do as I don't want to not ride for a week and the range of gears I have isn't suitable for my routes as they're hilly, although I can ride around the city OK.
My bike is a Giant Escape 2 and has done approximately 450 miles in 6 weeks. I degreased the chain and applied a wet lube last weekend, as well as giving the whole bike a good clean from top to bottom.
