its really adjustment that makes a good changing /running mech(front or rear)and for that reason i wouldnt touch halfords with a barge pole ,either do it yourself (its not hard)or get somebody who knows what they are doing properly(lbs?)either way its just reindexing and tweaking ,all you do is screw/bolt it on and fix cable and adjust /index ,use sheldon browns site

took my gt xcr down halfords yesterday as it wasnt changing gear on the front and they said the front mech had seized up

they want 35 notes for a new one but looking on crc it looks like this one

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=20684

my question is how do i know which one listed is the one i need and how easy is it to put on?

seems simple enough to do but are there any hidden pitfalls?

cheers for any advice

or go to techdocs http://techdocs.shimano.com/techdocs/index.jsp find the model of yours and dowload the pdf.

you may find that decathlon in Brum have one in and even cheaper , you also get to look at it before you buy and also other shiny bike stuff. in fact you may be able to get them to fit it for you as well and they are a damn sight better than halfrauds.

Mr Paul on here has experience of Decathlon in that part of the country.

Are you 100% sure it has seized?

You could try wd40 for a couple of days to see if that will free it. It could also simply be a frayed cable. Both of these are considerably cheaper than buying a front mech.

Yeah, if it's seized then I'd have thought it could be unseized.

If you can't free it, then replacement is a straightforward job; however if you don't want to do it yourself, then take it to a proper bike shop rather than Halfords.

I am currently trying to un-seize a front mech.

Having looked at various advice re de-greasers and trying to un-seize etc, I have settled on immersing it in paraffin (the wife banned me from putting it in the dishwasher, and using petrol would be expensive and dangerous, in my hands at least

How long do I need to leave it in the paraffin before removing and re-lubing. Also, I'm not going to wait too long as I need my commuter so at under £20 for a new tiagra fromt mech, I may just get a new one.

Anyone ever get the paraffin to work???
