Just got new bike

But the chain "taps" against the cage when it under load. When I rotate the cranks in reverse there's no noise at all.

Could the chain be too loose ?

Sounds like the front mech just needs adjusting or trimming whilst riding. What sort of bike is it, and what type of mech does it have?

Put the chain in the big ring then drop the mech down to the bottom ring leaving the chain on the top. Now by the shifter there will be an adjuster undo that by 1/2 a turn then move the mech back up to the big ring and test. If the mech has not moved try and see which limit screw is holding it back and undo that by 1/2 a turn and retest.

That's not very clear Spand. I have half an idea what you're on about and I have no idea what you're on about! ;0)

Is this in 'top' gear? Middle gear?

Bike is a Cannondale Syanapse triple with taigra mech + 9 speed cassette on rear

The shifting is perfect, no probs at all but the chain seems to "bounce" or "wobble" against the cage when rotating the pedals forward. Doesn't happen when the pedals are rotated in reverse.

You may just need to move the cage out slightly. Sometimes it's a right mare getting the chain to clear the cage at all times, especially with 9-speed cassettes.

That is what I was saying about moving the adjuster and or the the limit screw. Doing one or the over and maybe both is what is needed.
